Butte House Barber Shop - Yuba City, California

Going to this shop was a memorable experience.Just not in a good way. I had just moved to Yuba City from Martinez and wanted to see if here were any good shops nearby. I always get at least an A grade haircut with my Barber Vince who cuts hair out of his house in Martinez. I have been to at least 20 different barbers in my life and have only found one other A grade barber but he’s too popular and booking is a huge hassle.

Anyways, to compare Butte House to my regular barber, here are pros and cons besides distance and travel.
Pros: 1. Much Cheaper. 2. Haircuts in almost half the time.

Negatives: More than positive. I’ll explain in detail. When I arrived place was full. Owner ( guy with beard), was cutting right across entrance but did not greet me. No barber did. Never recall that happening in any Barbershop. But they were super busy. Owner looked at me when I walked in, but with a condescending demeanor. I came in 2-3 hours before they close, not sure if that was the reason. Anyways, after 30 minutes of waiting which was very reasonable for a walk in at barbershop, older barber perhaps 70’s or so, motions to two customers before me that he was available to cut their hair but they quickly refused and pointed at owner. I accepted. Bad decision. Older guy used long scizzors to cut my hair near front of head. Each time he did, he came dangerously close to my eyes. He was looking and chatting at owner each time he poked scizzors near my eyeballs. I squinted each time. First time I have ever felt fear in a barbershop haha. The cut cut was a solid C. I was out in less than 25 minutes once in Barber chair. Hair looked better than when I arrived, but I hadn’t had a haircut in like 10 weeks. It was very uneven and overgrown.

No. I will not be going back. I’ve had worse haircuts, but worrying about my eye getting poked and subpar service means this establishment was below average overall, even though haircut was average. I think I tipped though which was dumb on my part, as service didn’t meet expectations

Edit: After reading other low reviews that mention African American and Hispanic Barbers. My barber was an older white gentleman. Don’t care what your nationality or beliefs are as long as 1. You are courteous and 2. You do a good job on my hair, and in a safe manner. 👍

There's 1 decent barber that works during the week but we went on the weekend and I told the barber "short on the sides with a comb over and hard part" It looked OK when we left but after my son took a shower I realized how horribly uneven it was. It looked like he had 2 different hair cuts at once. I felt like I got ripped off because I had to take him to another barber and get his head buzzed to fix it costing me another 30 bucks. Never coming here again

Pretty lazy haircut if you ask me, cut one of my side burns and left half the other one. Asked for a taper, he gave me a 1 all around because it was easier just don't go here

I've gone here multiple times in the last few years and never had any problems, until recently. On February 15, my wife came to the shop with our 4 year old son and waited because there didn't seem to be an available barber at the time. One of the barbers, who was seated in his chair on his laptop, stated he was open so my wife and son went over. My wife was asked what she was wanting done, and then told "those seats work" implying she shouldn't be standing up next to our kid. At one point, my son moved his head which then caused the barber to let out a huge sigh and then tell my son, in a rude tone, to not move. This barber seemed very unprofessional, rude and unfriendly towards kids. It seemed he also may have messed up my son's hair as there's a patch of shorter hair near the top of his head(photo attached). He never gave his name, but his chair was the furthest from the front door. He was a tall, African American man. I've once had my haircut done by him and he was very rough with his clippers. I hope the owner reads reviews and is able to find a resolution with my issue/concern. I'm not asking for this man to be fired, but for him to be courteous towards others, especially kids. This also serves as a warning to other future patrons, do not get a haircut done by this man, and if this is the shop you choose, then choose any other barber.

I love taking my kid here, although the hours say till 6pm on Saturday and no one was there.. not even 6 yet!! Ughh disappointing

Wes, the owner, is the only Barber I've trusted to do my haircut in Yuba City since I first discovered this place. Prices are reasonable, especially considering the high quality, but make sure you bring cash. They don't accept debit or credit cards. And I have always been given the Veteran discount, although I did need to ask for it as I was not in uniform. Their haircut prices including the Veteran's discount are on a small chalkboard on the interior wall next to the entrance, easy to miss. Although I have never used the service, they also provide beard trims, and from what I can tell the customers are happy with the results.

The owner is a great guy. Great haircuts. I always tell them what I want but leave it up to them. Good atmosphere. I highly recommend. The owner is a flat top specialist.
